On the occasion of the European Heritage Days 2023 (Sept. 23-24) this year based on the theme "Patrimonio InVita," the Boncompagni Ludovisi Museum afferent to the State Museums Directorate of the city of Rome directed by Massimo Osanna, brings to life the exhibition The Artists House / La Casa degli Artisti. L’arte “viva” di Sally Smart in collaboration with PostmastersROMA.
Sally Smart is one of Australia's leading contemporary artists recognized internationally for her installations, performances, videos and textile works that address relationships between body, thought and culture. Her works often use cutting, sewing, and assemblage techniques to create complex, layered images.
Sally Smart's artworks occupying the spaces of The Boncompagni Ludovisi Museum - early 20th-century eclectic-style villa inhabited until the 1970s by a branch of the Boncompagni Ludovisi family- weave a dialogue with their host venue, echoing various themes found in its numerous rooms and artworks in its collection. For example, the contemporary artworks of Smart confront the museum’s 17th-century Flemish tapestries and archaeological nods of the trompe l’oeil frescoes of the Salone delle Vedute which evokes the splendor of the ancient Horti Sallustiani and the now vanished Villa Ludovisi.
Smart’s hybrid sculptures personify characters inspired from the everyday, art history and mythology including a faun, a harlequin, along with other personages imbued with aspects of the uncanny and the surreal. Her multifaceted sculptures and tapestries capture different epochs in the history of theater, dance, and performance - from ancient Greco-Roman tragedies, to the 16th-century Commedia dell'Arte, and the early 20th-century Ballets Russes.
The exhibition is curated by Matilde Amaturo, Valentina Filamingo, Eugenia Carabba Tettamanti, and Paulina Bebecka.

In occasione delle Giornate Europee del Patrimonio 2023 (23-24 settembre) quest’anno incentrate sul tema “Patrimonio InVita”, il Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi afferente alla Direzione Musei statali della città di Roma diretta da Massimo Osanna, dà vita al progetto espositivo The Artists House / La Casa degli Artisti. L'arte "viva" di Sally Smart in collaborazione con PostmastersROMA.
Sally Smart è una delle principali artiste contemporanee australiane riconosciuta a livello internazionale per le sue installazioni, performance, video e opere tessili che affrontano le intricate relazioni tra corpo, pensiero e cultura. Le sue opere utilizzano spesso tecniche di taglio, cucito e assemblaggio per creare immagini complesse e stratificate.
Gli spazi del Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi, villino in stile eclettico di inizio Novecento abitato fino agli anni Settanta da un ramo della famiglia Boncompagni Ludovisi, diventano la “casa” dove vivono le opere di Sally Smart e le arti rievocate dai suoi lavori: l’antica tragedia greca, romana, la Commedia dell'Arte del XVI secolo, i Balletti Russi del primo Novecento.
Ogni sua opera – ora ricamo artigianale, ora assemblaggio ora scultura in bronzo e tessuto - danza con la mitologia, gli archetipi, la psicologia, il costume, il teatro.
Fauni, figure ancestrali, arlecchini, volti mitologici si aggirano negli spazi del museo dedicato alla moda e al costume del XIX e XX secolo, incontrano le opere della collezione, si integrano nelle scenografie museali, si confrontano con le arazzerie fiamminghe del XVII secolo e con le suggestioni archeologiche nel trompe l’oeil del salone delle Vedute che rievoca i fasti degli antichi Horti Sallustiani e della scomparsa Villa Ludovisi.
