RAFAEL ROZENDAAL

PostmastersROMA is extremely delighted to announce the opening of its new permanent space located on via Giovanni Mario Crescimbeni, 11 in Rome, just next to the Colosseum. The first exhibition will be a show of haiku wall paintings by Rafaël Rozendaal.

Rozendaal started writing poems in the style of the traditional Japanese haiku on his phone in 2013. They took the shape of website posts and tweets, finally morphing into a publication and non physical artworks - the wall paintings on view at the gallery.

Nervous is an exhibition of 13 unique Haiku works, directly painted onto the wall; each comprising a standard color (five to choose from) and a broadly available font (Trebuchet). Accompanied by a sales contract, the works can only exist in one location at a time. They are transferable, in a similar fashion to the Sol LeWitt drawings; erase, choose a new space and paint again. The first installation for collectors in Rome is offered as courtesy by Postmasters Gallery. Easily collectable and indestructible, the works take no storage space, yet when displayed they exist in reality as paintings. Essentially, a perfect artwork for the minimalist times.

In short, the Haiku works are precise, laconic and focused, exactly in synch with Rozendaal's aesthetic and ideology; they are distilled thoughts, brain shortcuts, the essence of universal truths ideas and sentiments about the mundane.

The selected Haikus in the show reveal the anxiousness of our current time. Things we all think, thoughts our brains produce, self doubt, deprecating slants, desires, slight annoyances and frustrations.

Dutch-Brazilian, born in 1980, Rafaël Rozendaal creates installations, tapestries, lenticulars, haiku and websites, which are spread out over a vast network of domain names and attract a large online audience of over 45 million visits per year. His work has been exhibited in Times Square, Centre Pompidou, Venice Biennial, Casa Franca Brasil Rio, TSCA Gallery Tokyo, Seoul Art Square, NIMk Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum and is included in the Whitney Museum and Stedelijk Museum collections among others.

PostmastersROMA è lieta di annunciare l'apertura del suo nuovo spazio permanente a Roma, situato in via Giovanni Mario Crescimbeni 11, proprio a due passi dal Colosseo. La mostra inaugurale sarà un'esposizione di lavori della serie di Haiku di Rafaël Rozendaal.

Nel 2013 Rozendaal ha iniziato a scrivere haiku, tradizionale forma giapponese di poesie brevi, componendole sul suo telefono. Questi, dapprima sotto forma di commenti digitali, post e tweet si sono trasformati in una pubblicazione e in opere "non fisiche", ora presenti sulle pareti della galleria.

La mostra Nervous presenta 13 opere "non fisiche" uniche, realizzate direttamente negli spazi della galleria. Ognuna di queste è composta da un colore standard e da un font molto comune ed è accompagnata da un contratto di vendita che ne assicura l'unicità espositiva garantendo così che l'opera sia esposta in un solo luogo per volta. A chiusura della mostra le opere vengono cancellate e ridipinte in un altro spazio, similarmente a quanto accade con i disegni di Sol LeWitt.

In poche parole gli haiku sono precisi, laconici e concentrati proprio come l'estetica e l'ideologia di Rozendaal; sono pensieri distillati, scorciatoie mentali, essenze di saperi universali, idee e sensazioni circa il mondano. Gli haiku raccolti nella mostra rivelano l'ansietà dei nostri tempi, danno voce a riflessioni comuni, ai pensieri della nostra mente, alle insicurezze, allo sparlare, al desiderare, alle piccole frustrazioni e scocciature quotidiane.
