SARA BIRNS

Sara Birns takes us on an art history journey through her series of paintings. Seductive in their colors and inviting with their mystery, exploring unknown lands, Albert Bierstadt’s American landscapes from the 19th century are a great influence for the backgrounds of Birns' paintings. The protagonists in the paintings relate more to the static German New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) movement. It brought about in art the isolation of the subject from any contextual relationship, the focus on banal and insignificant objects without apparent aversion to what would be “normally” considered ugly. More precisely Franz Koh’s Magical Realism comes to mind when witnessing Birns’ works. Magical realists distanced themselves from the political aspect of New Objectivity and focused on the mysticism and secrets inherent in the objective world of the ordinary. All the paintings are realized using renaissance techniques.

The subject matter of the exhibition Blips in Matter, is a reflection on our pandemic, as all the paintings were created during this period. Birns says: Everyone was affected, and everyone was pushed out of their comfort zone to process and gain new understanding about themselves and this world. We have to decide how can we frame things in our mind to come out the other end more enlightened, with more love, and more curiosity after the unimaginable happens?

Living in a state of unknown, stationary and isolated, Birns' paintings attempt to answer this question.

Attraverso la sua serie di dipinti, Sara Birns ci conduce in un viaggio nella storia dell'arte.
Gli sfondi dei suoi dipinti sono influenzati dagli affascinanti paesaggi americani del XIX secolo di Albert Bierstadt. Terre sconosciute caratterizzate da seducenti colori e avvolte da un alone di mistero. I protagonisti delle opere dell’artista fanno invece riferimento al movimento artistico della Nuova Oggettività tedesca (Neue Sachlichkeit). Questo richiamo lo possiamo individuare in vari elementi tra cui l'isolamento del soggetto da ogni relazione contestuale, l'attenzione su oggetti banali e insignificanti e un particolare interesse ad aspetti grotteschi della rappresentazione dei soggetti. I lavori di Sara Birns rievocano inoltre il Realismo Magico di Franz Koh. I realisti magici hanno preso le distanze dall'aspetto politico della Nuova Oggettività e si sono concentrati sul misticismo e sui segreti inerenti al mondo oggettivo dell'ordinario. Infine, tutti i dipinti sono stati realizzati attraverso l’utilizzo di tecniche rinascimentali.

L’intera mostra è una riflessione sulla pandemia poiché tutti i dipinti sono stati creati proprio durante questo periodo. Birns dice: Tutti sono stati colpiti e tutti sono stati spinti fuori dalla loro comfort zone per elaborare e acquisire una nuova comprensione di loro stessi e di questo mondo. In che modo possiamo inquadrare le cose che abitano nella nostra mente e farle uscire migliori, illuminate, più cariche di amore e curiosità dopo quanto accaduto?

Vivendo nell’incertezza, nell’ignoto e in isolamento, i dipinti di Birns sono un tentativo per rispondere a questa domanda.
